How the village is laid out for a stay

Franz Josef is a small village, and the Franz Josef accommodation options are close together. The village sits only a few kilometres from the glacier, at the base of a World Heritage area.1 The glacier access road starts just south of the Waiho River bridge and runs 4 km to a car park, so the most convenient beds are in the village itself.7,8 From there you can walk to dinner, a hot tub, a helicopter base or a bus stop.

The only road in is State Highway 6, and Fox Glacier lies about 24 km away, a 24 minute drive.9,10 Both villages sit on the park boundary and offer accommodation, service stations, grocery stores and souvenir shops.11 Choosing one village and making day trips from it is simple, and Franz Josef is the natural base for the glacier and for activities such as the quad ride on this site.

The park visitor centre is at 69 Cron Street, open daily from 8:30am to 5:00pm except Christmas Day, and staff there can tell you which tracks are open.12,13 Other village businesses stand along that same stretch of road and along the main street. A stay within a short walk of both means you can check track conditions in the morning and be back for a hot soak after dark, without moving the car.

Hotels in the village and just outside it

The regional tourism group says Glacier Country has a select number of hotels, from national chains to boutique ones, in and around the Fox Glacier and Franz Josef villages.2 In Franz Josef, its list names Legacy Te Waonui Hotel, Scenic Hotel Franz Josef Glacier, Rainforest Retreat and Franz Josef Oasis Hotel. These are the properties to look at first if you want a restaurant or a bar on site.

Legacy Te Waonui Hotel describes itself as a luxury escape combined with environmental awareness.16 Franz Josef Oasis Hotel is a boutique hotel with a breakfast restaurant, only 5 minutes from the centre of Franz Josef.17 Rainforest Retreat describes a hot spa pool and a large cozy fireplace at the bar.18 We sell no hotel rooms here, so read each hotel's own page for rates, room types and policies before you book anywhere.

A hotel suits a short stay and a wet spell, with no cooking to plan. If you are only here for the glacier and one activity, a hotel with a restaurant on site saves effort when the cloud sits low and nobody wants to walk to dinner. For longer stays, or for families who want a kitchen, motels and villas are better value. Whichever you pick, book ahead, since the village is small.

Motels and self-contained stays

The regional list also covers motels and self-contained units, and it advises booking ahead around Fox Glacier and Franz Josef.6 Several are within minutes of the main street. Terrace Motel says it is the closest motel to the centre, on a quiet residential street, 3 minutes on foot from several restaurants and 4 minutes from the hot pools.4 The 10 Cottages are 2 minutes' walk from the centre, beside the rainforest.3

Alpine Glacier Motel says it is the closest motel to the glacier, right in the township.29 Bella Vista Motel stands in the centre of the village with studios and 1 bedroom family units.20 58 On Cron Motel is across from the Glacier Base building complex.30 Aspen Court Motel is a minute from the Glacier Hot Pools.31 All of these put you at walking distance from the village's meals, so you can leave the car outside.

If you want space and a view, look a little out of town. Glenfern Villas stand 3 km north of the village and offer 18 apartment-style villas.21 Jagescape Franz Alpine Retreat is a 5-minute drive from the township.19 Kahere Retreat, a luxury chalet, is 13 km from the glacier.32 Out-of-town stays suit those with a car, and they trade walkability for quiet, so check how you will reach activity meeting points.

Lodges, bed and breakfasts and budget beds

For a more personal stay, the regional list has a bed and breakfast and lodge category in and around both villages.47 Wild Kea Lodge stands in the heart of the village, a short walk from the shops and activities.22 Holly Homestead Bed & Breakfast offers king, queen or twin rooms.48 At these smaller places the hosts can give local advice, such as which trails are open.

On a budget, the regional list names campgrounds, caravan and campervan parks, budget hostels and backpackers in both villages.49 Haka House Franz Josef presents itself as a wilderness retreat for budget conscious travellers.23 Chateau Backpackers & Motels offers private motel rooms and luxury dorm rooms set in rainforest.24 Dorms and private rooms side by side let a group split the costs without splitting up.

A budget stay in Franz Josef still puts you close to the main sights, with the walks a short step away. The walks start in or near the village, and the glacier car park is a short drive away.8 Look at the facilities you need, such as a kitchen or drying room: rain is common and wet gear needs somewhere to go.44 Pack your own food if you can, and use the supermarket for the rest.

Camping, campervans and the freedom camping rule

Glacier Country has no freedom camping, because the region sits within the Te Wāhipounamu World Heritage Area; visitors are asked to use designated campsites.5 Holiday and campervan parks at Franz Josef include Franz Josef TOP10 Holiday Park, Orange Sheep Campervan Park and Rainforest Retreat.26 Book ahead where you can, and check each park's rules on arrival times and noise.

There are 2 Department of Conservation campsites in the area with basic facilities, and Otto/MacDonalds Campsite is at Lake Mapourika, near Franz Josef.25 Lake Mapourika is described as a top spot for boating, fishing, kayaking, camping and swimming.50 Ōkārito also has a community-run campground a short walk from the beach and the lagoon.51 Expect basic facilities at the DOC sites, and bring insect repellent.52

Campervans need fuel and supplies. Glacier Motors on Main Road sells fuel around the clock all year.53,14 The Four Square Supermarket is at 24 State Highway 6.54 Mobile coverage is available in both villages, but Haast to the south has limited coverage.55,56 Fill up before you drive on, plan your charging, and keep a paper map as a fallback.

Choosing by walkability, season and activity

Walkability matters. This site's quad ride meets 15 minutes before the trip on the Main Road, next to a restaurant, in the same building as a helicopter base. A flight listing starts at 10 Main Road, at the south end of the main street opposite the police station. A bed in the village means you walk to these start points and skip the parking hunt.

Think about weather too. Heavy rain can arrive at any time of year, with up to 5 m falling annually.44 A motel with a kitchen or a hotel with a restaurant keeps a wet evening comfortable, and a campsite with a shelter helps in the same way. For a walk day, the glacier car park fees are NZ$2.50 per half hour or NZ$20 a day, so a bed near the village saves a drive and a fee for tracks that start in town.57,28

If you are still deciding where to stay in Franz Josef, match your base to your plan. For a glacier hike or a flight, which are weather dependent, book a spare night so you have a spare day. For a family, a self-contained unit with a kitchen is easy. For couples, a lodge or a boutique hotel adds comfort. For campers, the designated parks put you on the road to the walks. A good base is the one that fits your slowest morning.

Supplies, money and getting around once you are here

The village has the basics. There is a supermarket at 24 State Highway 6, and an ATM stands outside the West Coast Wildlife Centre.54,46 Fuel is available around the clock all year at Glacier Motors.14 Dial 111 for police, fire and ambulance.58 Carry a bit of food for the road, and fill your tank before a long drive south or north, whichever way you are heading next.

Without a car you can still manage. Bus transport in and around Franz Josef Glacier is listed with Glacier Shuttles, and Intercity Coachlines for national travel.27 Te Ara a Waiau, a walkway and cycleway, links the township to the glacier car park, 8.7 km return.59 Several village walks begin on the streets, such as Terrace Walk at 1.8 km return and the Tatare Tunnels Walk from Cowan Street.28,41 Carless stays are practical here.

Last, think about the nights, because after dark the village is quiet. Terrace Walk is 30 min and gives glow-worms to those with a torch.28,45 Waiho Hot Tubs is open daily until after dusk.15 A bed near those spots turns the evening into part of the trip, with no driving after dark. Ask your host about parking, late check-in and a place to dry boots, and you will sleep better.
